It’s official! The end of September marked the end of the 2015 “Guess my Harvest” contest sponsored this year by great friends at Gardener’s Supply Company, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and Nature’s Footprint.
My tomato-growing season was full of uncertainty this year as my plants got off to a pretty slow start. And, just like last year, I forgot/failed to prune the plants so they were just all over the place. My goal this year was to work with fewer plants than last year and not get quite so overwhelmed. But once again, the tomato growing, harvesting and preserving damn-near killed me as I struggled to keep up with frequent harvests of 15 pounds or more. Even though the contest period is over, the plants continue to pump out tomatoes and I continue to be grateful.
In total, my yield through the end of September was 219 pounds, 6 ounces. The contest rules state that the Grand Prize winner must be the closest guess, without going over. This year, I decided to add two runners up prizes that were randomly selected to encourage more people to enter, even if they didn’t have a clue about how many tomatoes I might grow.
I’m so excited for this year’s winners because they are getting some great stuff to help them grow their own food!
GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Chrissy from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania
FIRST RUNNER UP: Angelica from Bremerton, Washington
SECOND RUNNER UP: Stephanie from Kenosha, Wisconsin
I thank ALL OF YOU for your support of Tomato Envy and for your entries! I wish I could send a big fat prize to each of you. If you are not among the winners, just remember what the gardener says: There’s always next year!
